Bad at Yoga

By: Xandra Popescu and Larisa Crunțeanu

Guilty Yoga is a series of instructive videos proposing Yoga Solutions for personal, social or political issues: Yoga for False Consciousness, Yoga for Debt, Yoga for Conservatives, Yoga for Work Addiction, Yoga for Discrimination. In each video a Yoga instructor demonstrates choreographies for a adverse situations a person or a community may be confronted with. The practitioners present the advantages and technique of these positions, combining reality and fiction, healing motivational and critical discourses.

In the documentary film “YogaWoman”, Donna Farhi, a respectable yoga teacher declares: “Yoga is one of the most politically subversive practices that any person, male or female could do in our time.” In other words, spiritual, physical and psychological transformation is politically subversive. But can individual physical and spiritual emancipation conjure political change? Can personal reconstruction through action over one´s own body address economic injustice or discrimination?
